Dakota
10/27/1997 - 1/11/2011
Dakota came to us as our first rescue OES. Having been 'owned' by OES's for quite a few years and having
lost three of our dogs in a ten month period of time, we decided to give a rescue a chance and were 'approved'
to receive Dakota by Annie Raker from NEOESR. Not only was Dakota a catalyst in starting our own rescue
group, but he became a wonderful emissary for the breed and traveled extensively, meeting so many wonderful
people that have remained friends through the years.
Dakota was unique. He had the most beautiful tail! He was likened to the old cartoon, Pepe LePew
because of his prancing gait, paws held high when he ran and even more so when there was water involved.
He hated the rain and would wait patiently for an umbrella to appear before venturing out in the weather. In
his older years, Dakota became quite mellow and fit quite nicely into the title of 'doggie lama'.
As he aged, Dakota lost his eyesight and some of his mobility but never his zest for a good walk or
a doggie treat. His last walk came on a beautiful clear Sunday. He enjoyed himself, went inside, lay
down on his bed and never moved from there until his death in the early hours of the following Tuesday.
Having seen his unresponsiveness, I'd planned to have my vet visit my home for his leavetaking but
Dakota went in own way, peacefully in his sleep. Of the eleven OES's I've lost in the past 30+ years,
he was the only one that went that way.
I miss my boy but know that he's gone on to his next journey. I love you Dakota, my boy. RIP.
