Basil

I love all our Happy Endings but this one now holds a special place in my heart. TOESR was notified of the need to rehome Basil days after her owner's unexpected death. We weren't given much time to come up with a plan but within a couple of days Basil had been picked up, set to be fostered and then adopted by a kind and willing resident in the area. While initially things seemed to be working, there were some underlying issues. And with developing health concerns of her own, Basil's new mom, reluctantly had to rehome her.

While we researched another home for Basil, our 'super foster mom', Dena took charge of the senior and 'quite the curmudgeon' sheepie. Eventually there was a home found for Basil, but she'd had a couple of health issues that we wanted to check before sending her to another new home. Basil's spleen was close to rupturing but even at her age, we felt it in her best interests to go ahead with the surgery to remove it. Basil has proved to be quite resilient and came through her surgery without any problems. During the process we learned however that Basil had lymphoma. Everyone agreed that she didn't have a lot of time left. But that's when life changed for this senior dog. One of our prior adopters felt she was called upon to offer Basil a home for the remainder of time remaining. While TOESR was in the background, Stacy, her son & their resident dog deserve all the credit. There have been some scares and numerous vet trips but we're no longer seeing any signs of cancer. Yes, Basil has had her moments. Yes, she's still quite set in her ways and can be stubborn but as Stacy has reported, she has good moments and days. She's become the 'star' of the neighborhood! And she's happy.

When Stacy approached me a week or so ago, suggesting that they adopt Basil, I couldn't have been happier. And I feel that we're remarkably blessed to have such volunteers in our TOESR family who would go to those lengths for our dogs. For me personally & for those other TOESR family members, we owe Stacy and her son a huge debt of gratitude! Basil is finally home.
